Fake job and visa-fee scams are common, especially those targeting Indians for Gulf jobs. Every job posted here is checked before it goes live, but no one — including us — can guarantee a vacancy is real. Here's how to spot the common scams and verify an employer yourself before you apply.

Common Gulf and India job scams

Visa fee scams

You're asked to pay a "visa processing fee", "medical fee", or flight/ticket cost before you can join. Genuine employers sponsor and pay for your visa and travel themselves — you should never pay for either.

Registration / security deposit scams

You're asked for a "registration fee", "security deposit", or "training fee", often described as "fully refundable". It rarely is. No genuine employer charges you money to be hired.

Fake offer letters

A polished-looking offer letter with a real company's logo, sent from a personal Gmail/Yahoo address or a domain that's almost — but not quite — the company's real one (e.g. "tcs-careers.in" instead of "tcs.com"). Always verify an offer directly with the company through its official website or switchboard, not just the number on the letter.

WhatsApp-only "HR"

The entire hiring process happens over WhatsApp or Telegram, with no company email, no video call, and no way to verify who you're actually talking to. A recruiter who avoids every other channel is a red flag on its own.

How to verify an employer

  1. Find the company's official website yourself (search for it — don't just trust a link in the message) and check the role is listed on their own careers page.
  2. Look up the company on LinkedIn and check the recruiter's profile matches — a real HR person usually has a real, established profile.
  3. Check that the HR email address is on the company's own domain, not a personal Gmail/Yahoo/Outlook address and not a domain that only looks similar to the company's.
  4. Call the company's official, publicly listed number (not one given to you only in the message) and ask them to confirm the vacancy and the recruiter's name.
  5. Search "<company name> scam" or "<company name> fake job" — genuine complaints from other job seekers usually surface quickly.

How to verify an Indian overseas recruiting agent

If an Indian agency is recruiting you for a job in the Gulf, Indian law requires them to be registered with the Ministry of External Affairs' eMigrate system. Before paying any agency fee (which is capped by law) or signing anything:

  1. Go to emigrate.gov.in and look up the agency's Registration Certificate (RC) number.
  2. Confirm the agency's name and address match exactly what's on your documents.
  3. Check the RC hasn't expired or been suspended.
  4. Never pay an unregistered agent, and never pay more than the government-capped service charge.
